The tour moved on to the capital city Dublin, a distance of 190 kilometres, where myself and Hugh were now joined by group members Jane from Scotland and Linda from The Netherlands.
The show was also watched from a private box by Gilbert's mother, his stepfather Pat and his sister Marie.
The show was a complete sellout and Gilbert's wife Aase and daughter Helen-Marie had to watch from the wings.
There were a selection of items for sale at the concert. There was also a greatest hits tape, an Irlish tee-shirt and an Irlish sweatshirt. The following CDs were on sale:
1st HALF
DISAPPEARAt 8.15 p.m. Gilbert walked on stage and began the show.
THE THING IS - [From the album "A STRANGER IN MY OWN BACK YARD"]"It's been over three years since we were here" said Gilbert. "You're still gorgeous " replied a fan.
NOTHING RHYMED - [From the album "HIMSELF"]Gilbert mentioned that a bra was thrown at him for the first time last night. "Eat your heart out Tom Jones".
NO MATTER HOW I TRYGilbert shouts "rock on Tommy" to begin the solo. This is a reference to the catchphrase used by Bobby Ball of British comedy duo Canon & Ball when talking to his partner Tommy Canon.
BECAUSE OF YOU - [From the album "BY LARRY" / "THE LITTLE ALBUM"]Gilbert mentioned that he still had a cold and when a fan suggested he take some Lemsip, he replied "I have taken so many Lemsips that they are coming out my eyes." (That's what he said).
WE WILL
HAVE IT - [From the album "IRLISH"]
MISS MY LOVE TODAY - [From the album "SOUTHPAW"]Gilbert as a songwriter is especially delighted when album tracks are particularly liked as opposed to the obvious hit singles, although he likes that as well.
STICK IN THE MUD - [From the album "FROBISHER DRIVE / IN THE KEY OF G"]
CLAIR - [From the album "BACK TO FRONT"]
SOMETIMES - [From the album "SOUNDS OF THE LOOP"]
THE WAY THINGS USED TO BE - [From the album "FROBISHER DRIVE / IN THE KEY OF G"]The playing of this song is always hard on Gilbert's left hand as he pounds at the keys relentlessly. "Karate of the keyboard" as he says.
WHAT'S IN A KISS? - [From the album "OFF CENTRE"]This song was received with rapturous applause.
FOREVER WONDERING - [From the album "FROBISHER DRIVE"]Gilbert mentioned that this was one of his Fats Domino type songs, and that he has in fact contacted Fats Domino with the view to doing a duet together. At the moment Fats is unwell and not getting any younger, but Gilbert is hopeful that it might happen sometime in the future.
HOLD ON TO WHAT YOU GOT- [From the album "BY LARRY / THE LITTLE ALBUM"]
THUNDER AND LIGHTNING - [From the album "HIMSELF"]From the Himself album.
THE INTERVAL WAS FROM 9.25 p.m. UNTIL 9.45p.m.
2nd HALF
A FRIEND OF MINE - [From the album "I'M A WRITER NOT A FIGHTER"]
ME - [From the album "IRLISH"]
SAY GOODBYE - [From the album "IRLISH"]
WATER MUSIC - [From the album "IRLISH"]Great response to this song.
WHO WAS IT? - [From the album "BACK TO FRONT"]No sound effects tonight.
THE MARRIAGE MACHINE - [From the album "A STRANGER IN MY OWN BACK YARD"]These are the lyrics of the snippet of I Love Married Women that Gilbert sang.
I love married woman, for me they are the bestI love the way they comb their hair, I love the way they dress
Love the kind of feelings they invoke inside my brain
Married women sure know how to drive a man insane
MR. MOODY'S GARDENThe order of the next two songs were reversed for some reason. When Gilbert sang the line "Now just across the lawn is Pat" he nodded in the direction of his stepfather.
A WOMAN'S PLACE - [From the album "A STRANGER IN MY OWN BACK YARD"]Gilbert related singing this song in Brisbane in Australia and especially the battle of the sexes part. Aussie men have a reputation for being macho men but when it came to singing their part , there was hardly a squeak out of them while the woman brought the house down. Tonight's battle of the sexes ended in a draw.
WHAT COULD BE NICER (MUM THE KETTLE'S BOILING) - [From the album "BACK TO FRONT"]
OOH-WAKKA-DOO-WAKKA-DAY
This evening there were six tap dancers, four ladies and two men. The men especially received a fantastic reaction when they stepped forward and danced solo.
ALONE AGAIN (NATURALLY)
Gilbert was joined on stage by guitarist Mike Broomfield. You might remember Mike from Gilbert's recent Late Late Show appearance. His guitar solo was excellent.
ENCORE
MATRIMONY - [From the album "HIMSELF"]
GET DOWN - [From the album "I'M A WRITER NOT A FIGHTER"]
THE SHOW ENDED AT 10.55p.m.
After the show we queued outside the stage door. As we waited Gilbert's mother and stepfather came out. I greeted them and said to Gilbert's mother "you must be very proud of your boys". To which she smiled and said "I am...very much so". After a long, cold wait of over an hour we were allowed into the dressing room. It was obvious that Gilbert was completely worn out and could barely speak even in a whisper. It would have been understandable in the circumstances had Gilbert decided not to see his fans but once again he put his fans first and soldiered on.
