Tonight's show is in Dublin, the capital of Ireland on the east coast. Gilbert always gets a great reception in Dublin and once again Dublin delivered. The theatre was full to capacity and the crowd went ballistic, and I mean ballistic, when Gilbert appeared on stage. Among the audience was the whole O'Sullivan clan who had travelled from near and far to support our hero. As usual Gilbert went straight into the first song without introduction.
1st HALF: STARTED AT 20:10 - LASTED 65 MINUTES
IT AIN'T FOR ME - [From the album "BY LARRY / THE LITTLE ALBUM"] [Gilbert : Electric Piano, Mick Parker : Accordion] Thunderous applause. Gilbert appeared totally relaxed and enjoying himself.
THE THING IS - [From the album "A STRANGER IN MY OWN BACK YARD"] [Gilbert : Electric Piano, Mick Parker : Synth, Julian Webster Greaves : Saxophone, Helen & Victoria Hardy : Backing Vocals] When the applause, cheers and whistles eventually died down, Gilbert greeted the audience saying that Dublin was like a "Home from home".
NOTHING RHYMED - [From the album "HIMSELF"] [Gilbert : Electric Piano, Mick Parker : Synth, Julian Webster Greaves : Flute] This song was almost drowned out with applause and cheers and then the singing began........and Gilbert sang as well.
NO MATTER HOW I TRY - [From the album "THE BERRY VEST OF"] [Gilbert : Electric Piano, Mick Parker : Synth, Julian Webster Greaves : Foot Stomps] Gilbert went straight into this song without stopping. The crowd loved this one.
[Gilbert : Electric Piano, Mick Parker : Synth, Helen & Victoria Hardy : Backing Vocals]
WE WILL - [From the album "THE BERRY VEST OF"] [Gilbert : Electric Piano, Mick Parker : Synth, Helen & Victoria Hardy : Backing Vocals] To enable me from constantly repeating myself, just take it that every song was very well received, especially the big hits which were met with deafening applause.
MAKE MY DAY - [From the album "PIANO FOREPLAY"] [Gilbert : Electric Piano, Mick Parker : Synth, Julian Webster Greaves : Saxophone, Helen & Victoria Hardy : Backing Vocals] Gilbert said "I was reading the Irish Independent today and was checking the 'What's On In Dublin Listings' looking for a mention of tonight's show. It wasn't under Rock, wasn't under Pop, It was under Folk / Traditional. So if you came expecting me to play guitar and sing "Blowin' In The Wind followed by The Irish Rover, you may go now. (Audience laughter). The Independent can go into the rubbish bin along with the Hot Press (An Irish music magazine which has been unfairly critical of Gilbert and his music in the past).
MISS MY LOVE TODAY - [From the album "SOUTHPAW"] [Gilbert : Synth, Mick Parker : Synth]
STICK IN THE MUD - [From the album "FROBISHER DRIVE / IN THE KEY OF G"] [Gilbert : Electric Piano, Mick Parker : Synth, Julian Webster Greaves : Saxophone, Helen & Victoria Hardy : Backing Vocals] Gilbert said "A lot of good acts are coming out of Ireland lately. The Thrills are good. My wife likes them. They had tea with us recently. There's Damien Dempsey, Damien Rice and David Kitt. It's a very healthy scene. They'd probably consider me a granddad but I feel it important to listen to young songwriters, even after writing songs for thirty five years, I can still learn things from them."
CLAIR - [From the album "BACK TO FRONT"] [Gilbert : Electric Piano, Mick Parker : Synth, Julian Webster Greaves : Harmonica, Helen & Victoria Hardy : Backing Vocals] Gilbert sang this with the audience.
SOMETIMES - [From the album "SOUNDS OF THE LOOP"] [Gilbert : Electric Piano, Julian Webster Greaves : Flute]
THE WAY THINGS USED TO BE - [From the album "FROBISHER DRIVE / IN THE KEY OF G"] [Gilbert : Synth, Mick Parker : Synth, Helen & Victoria Hardy : Backing Vocals]
WHAT'S IN A KISS? - [From the album "OFF CENTRE"] [Gilbert : Electric Piano, Mick Parker : Synth, Helen & Victoria Hardy : Backing Vocals] More audience singing. "You're in good voice" commented Gilbert.
FOREVER WONDERING - [From the album "FROBISHER DRIVE"] [Gilbert : Electric Piano, Mick Parker : Synth, Julian Webster Greaves : Saxophone, Helen & Victoria Hardy : Backing Vocals] Gilbert mentioned Fats Domino and his famous riff and how he himself had tried to learn the guitar, but being forced to place right handed made it too difficult, so he learned to play piano. Gilbert added, "It doesn't matter if you are a "ciatog" (Irish word for left handed) when learning the piano". I must give credit to Julian here. All his solos on his various instruments are great but his saxophone playing here was fab.
WHY, OH WHY, OH WHY - [From the album "THE BERRY VEST OF"] [Gilbert : Electric Piano, Mick Parker : Synth, Helen & Victoria Hardy : Backing Vocals] During the bridge of the song a fan shouted out "Nice one Gilbert".
THUNDER AND LIGHTNING - [From the album "HIMSELF"] [Gilbert : Electric Piano, Mick Parker : Synth, Julian Webster Greaves : Saxophone, Helen & Victoria Hardy : Backing Vocals] "Nice one Jules."

OUT OF THE QUESTION - [From the album "BACK TO FRONT"] [Gilbert : Electric Piano, Mick Parker : Synth, Julian Webster Greaves : Flute, Helen & Victoria Hardy : Backing Vocals]
PERMISSIVE TWIT - [From the album "HIMSELF"] [Gilbert : Electric Piano, Mick Parker : Synth] "This is a Dublin favourite" Gilbert added. The crowd sang like one huge choir, which led Gilbert to applaud us.
SAY GOODBYE - [From the album "IRLISH"] [Gilbert : Electric Piano, Mick Parker : Synth, Julian Webster Greaves : Flute, Helen & Victoria Hardy : Backing Vocals]
WATER MUSIC - [From the album "IRLISH"] [Gilbert : Vocals]

A WOMAN'S PLACE - [From the album "A STRANGER IN MY OWN BACK YARD"] [Gilbert : Electric Piano, Mick Parker : Synth, Julian Webster Greaves : Saxophone, Helen & Victoria Hardy : Backing Vocals]

WILL I DO - [From the album "PIANO FOREPLAY"] [Gilbert : Electric Piano) Gilbert spoke about being born in Ireland and how he's proud of his roots and how he likes to mention his Irishness in songs. To show this he sang the part of "Will I Do" ending on the lines:

GET DOWN - [From the album "I'M A WRITER NOT A FIGHTER"] [Gilbert : Electric Piano, Mick Parker : Synth, Julian Webster Greaves : Tambourine & Backing Vocals, Helen & Victoria Hardy : Backing Vocals] The crowd went wild for this song, which ended one of the best Gilbert shows I have ever seen.
The number of people that are travelling from abroad to see Gilbert is increasing at each show. I was thrilled to see my friends Fernando and Maria who came over from Spain especially to see Gilbert for the first time and enjoyed it so much that afterwards they were emotionally overcome with the whole experience, such is the magic of Gilbert. Also a pleasure to spend time with Tom & Sharon Turnbull from Cheltenham. Denmark was represented by Jorun Lehn who travelled from Oslo. Keep in touch Jorun. A big welcome to the Gilbert fanclub to Brian Perris. Also a quick mention to the regular army of travelling fans: Jane B. John and Chris, John and Shirley, Mary and Graham, Linda, Mike and Paul, not forgetting my pal Dale, who thinks nothing of hopping on a plane (twice this year) and travelling from the U.S. to see Raymond Edward O'Sullivan.
