GILBERT FALLS BUT IS OKAY

Tonight the third of four nights in Dublin was to be an eventful night.  At the end of the show while taking a his bow, Gilbert desended the steps at the front of the stage to kiss a fan.  As he turned another fan grabbed at him causing him to lose his balance and he fell sideways from a height of five feet headlong into the empty orchestra pit.  Security staff rushed to his aid and for what seemed an eternity he didn't emerge.  The audience fell silent realising the seriousness of the situation.  After about [a long] thirty seconds he got up brushed himself down and got back on stage and went into the wings.  He later emerged still shook up, rubbing his arm and played the encore to wild applause.

Earlier Gilbert decided to make changes to the set list.  During the sound check he rehearsed "One Door Closes", "Just So You Know" and "Is It A Crime?" but only played the first one in the show but made other changes instead.

It was nice to meet Hans Neuhaus from Amsterdam in the Netherlands who has travelled over for two shows.  Once again the concert was a sell-out.  It was nice to see Gerry and Suzanne Fogarty from Dublin there.  Also in the audience was Paul Harrington who along with Charlie McGettigan won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994 with "Rock'N'Roll Kids".

There was two changes lineup on stage tonight with both Bill Shanley and Julian Webster Greaves returning.

For the purpose of this report the personnel on stage were:

String Quartet: Laura Stanford [violin], Eleanor Stanford [violin], Amy Stanford [violin] and Jessica Cox [cello].

Band: Liam Bradley [drums + percussion], Bill Shanley [guitars] and James Blennerhassett [bass].

Backing Vocals: Charlotte James and Nina Ferro.

Saxophone, Flute & Harmonica: Julian Webster Greaves.

Keyboard and Accordion: Mick Parker.

TAKE YOUR FOOT OFF MY TOE - [From the album "A SCRUFF AT HEART"]

Tonight the trombone solo was played by Niall Harvey.  Those among you who saw Gilbert's recent appearance on The Late Late Show singing this song will recognise Niall, as he played the solo that night also.

Gilbert [Electric Piano] + String Quartet + Charlotte & Nina [Backing Vocals]

Gilbert asked "Did anyboy take part in the Marathon yesterday?" [The Dublin City Marathon took place on Bank Holiday Monday].  My only experience of the Marathon is writing about it, I have a song about it [quoting]:

Like to run a marathon I'm sure I could

I've been eating them for years

They do taste good"

OUT OF THE QUESTION - [From the album "BACK TO FRONT"]

Gilbert [Electric Piano] + Mick [Keyboard] + Julian [Flute] + Charlotte & Nina [Backing Vocals]

Gilbert changed from the piano to the keyboard for this song.  Just like previous nights the crowd clapped along and sang  "One minute you say you will, and the next you don't."  Gilbert sang the line "

If you want me" and allowed the crowd  to resond "It's really out of the question."  This song is a big crowd favourite.

MISS MY LOVE TODAY - [From the album "SOUTHPAW"]

Gilbert [Keyboard] + Mick [Keyboard]

"Steady now we have a long way to go, don't wear yourselves out yet" advised Gilbert.  "We love you Gilbert" a girl cried, "I love you too" replied Gilbert.

ONE DOOR CLOSES - [From the album "A SCRUFF AT HEART"]

Gilbert [Electric Piano] + String Quartet + Mick [Keyboard] + Julian [Flute]

This was the first change to tonight's set list.  Gilbert explained "We normally do another song at this point but this is our third night here now.  This song is about a situation that we all have been through where people promise you things and they never come to anything.  And people say things like you'll get the job, you'll get the award and you never do".

YOU CAN'T CONCRETE - [From the album "A SCRUFF AT HEART"]

Gilbert [Electric Piano] + Mick [Keyboard] + Julian [Saxophone]

Gilbert was checking his notes with difficulty because of the low lighting and said "It's a senior moment......only a minor senior moment, I have't reached the Buddy Holly stage yet." "We love you Gilbert" a male fan shouted.

Gilbert [Keyboard] + String Quartet + Mick [Keyboard] + Charlotte & Nina [Backing Vocals]

Gilbert [Electric Piano] + String Quartet

SOMETIMES - [From the album "SOUNDS OF THE LOOP"]

Gilbert [Keyboard] + Julian [Flute]

This is a like a cover version of my own song because it's done more simple.

OOH-WAKKA-DOO-WAKKA-DAY - [From the album "THE BERRY VEST OF"]

Gilbert [Electric Piano] + Mick [Keyboard] + Julian [Flute]

In the song Gilbert sang "

Now here in Dublin, a man named Robin".  "You're in good voice" Gilbert told the audience afterwards.

KNOW WHAT YOU'RE RIGHT - [From the album "A SCRUFF AT HEART"]

Gilbert [Electric Piano] + String Quartet

CLAIR - [From the album "BACK TO FRONT"]

The crowd loved this one.  At the end of each verse Gilbert sang "Clair" and looked to the audience and they sang "Oh Clair"

Later Gilbert sang:  "Clair, I've told you before, don't you dare, get"

The Crowd replied: "Back into bed".

Gilbert: "Can't you"

Gilbert said "I think we'll do a bit of Fats Domino.  We haven't rehearsed this but we will just throw it in.  A bit of Fats. There is an interesting line in this that people laugh at when I play abroad, the line is my girlfriend was killed at the top of Marble Arch.  People imagine a bus on the top of an arch, not realising that we say the top of the road, the top of Marble Arch [a place in London].  As if to prove that it was unrehearsed, Gilbert called on Bill midway through the song to give a guitar solo.

WHAT'S IN A KISS? - [From the album "OFF CENTRE"]
